Parent-Approved, Planet-Friendly Gift Guide for Kids

Holiday Gift Guide for Kids

One of the best ways to protect the planet for the future is to start early--with the generation who will inhabit that future. And what better time to start than the holidays!

This season, put on your sustainable Santa hat when shopping for your kids. It’s a great opportunity to introduce a few reusable gifts to their stockings and help your little ones develop an appreciation for presents that last beyond the 25th.

To get you started, we’ve rounded up 10 of our favorite holiday gift ideas for kids.  All of them have been vetted for their give-back, sustainable approach, and none of them make noise or stain the carpets (you’re welcome).

For the Mud-Pie Maker:  Nature Supply Co. “A Little Dirt Never Hurt” Tee

Celebrate your child’s connection to the earth with a super-comfy shirt that regenerates one square foot of degraded soil Nature Supply Co.’s partnerships with The Carbon Underground and 1% for the Planet. Plus, it’s so soft  you might need one for yourself.

For the Social Snackers:  To-Go Ware Bamboo Utensil Set - Kids

When they see you wielding your own set of reusable cutlery, you know they’ll be wanting one, too. Consider a set for their backpacks and a set for the car so they’ll never need a plastic fork again. Be sure to get a different color for each kid to avoid spoon-thievery. Bonus for parents: they’re dishwasher safe!

For the Prehistoric Preference:  Khala & Co. DinoClimate Beeswax Combo Packs

It’s a known fact: it’s more fun to help put dinner away when you get to wrap the leftover in dinosaurs and mermaids. Made from natural waxes, coconut oil and natural tree resin, the planet-friendly wax wraps are great for school snacks, treats-to-go, or even for arts and crafts. Also makes great doll clothes!

For the Competitive Kiddo:  Buena Onda Boredom Relief Kit

Great for road trips, rainy days, and the quarantine blues, this unique ball game supports Buena Onda’s mission to “Play for Good.” Made by hand in Guatemala, this game set helps fund water filtration and school supply projects as well as supporting sustainable working conditions and fair wages for over 600 Mayan families. We especially love this kit to ease Zoom brain--no electronics required!

For the Scholastic Student:  The Good Pencil Company Pencils with Purpose - Ocean Cleanup

There’s nothing quite like a freshly-sharpened pencil to craft your next masterpiece--unless that same pencil is also supporting groups helping clean the oceans! Pencils with a Purpose donates the same amount of money you spend on a purchase toward organizations doing good at home and in the environment. They also donate pencils to schools in need, educate on the importance of trees, support front-line workers with 3D-printed masks, and clean up trash in the mountains. That’s a pretty hard-working pencil!

For the Budding Builder:  Raduga Grez Earth Stacking Tower

Made of sustainably sourced wood and water-based paints by a family of third-generation carpenters in Russia, this beautiful tower of stacking blocks is great for motor skill development, problem-solving, and imaginative play. No glue or plywood means it’s toxin-free, and the beautiful earth tones make it look lovely even in your living room if you don’t have time to clean up before guests arrive.

For the Water Baby:  Nomadix Zone Teal Changing Poncho Bundle

One for you, one for your kiddo. Get two sets, and there’s a poncho for the whole fam! These changing ponchos are great for a quick clothing swap after days in the sand on the snow, or--let’s be honest--good ‘ol laundry days. Each poncho is made from recycled water bottles and avoids harmful dyes. Responsible manufacturing processes and beautiful designs means this is a gift you’ll feel good about them wearing all year long.

For the Night Owl:  BioLite HeadLamp 330

Keep the monsters at bay and kidlets at play with a rechargeable head light. The light lasts for up to four hours, great for a game of flashlight tag or reading under the covers. Recharge by USB so you never have to answer to “Mom, I need more batteries!” again. We’re clearly biased toward the Ocean Teal color.

For the Sweet Tooth:  Happy Family Organics Fruit and Oats Bars

A few of these bars in his or her stocking is a great way to share a sweet treat without the dreaded sugar rush. None of their products have sugar or preservatives, all of them are certified USDA organic. You can filter your shopping by allergy to quickly navigate to the best snack for your child, and there’s even a free chat option on their website for lactation and dietary questions. Win for parents, win for the kids!

For the Outdoor Dreamer:  Earth Easy Fairy House Building Kit

Gnomes, fairies, sprites, and other woodland creatures will find rest in this magical tree house. Using the included bark, moss, driftwood, seashells, pine cones, feathers, as well as any other natural items they love, your children can build a home fit for any spirited friend. Another great option for keeping kids off the phone and TV, this kit is made in the USA and supports water conservation and Trees for the Future Foundation.

Bonus Tip: Consider wrapping your presents in a  ChicoBag Moisture Locking Bag Set or  ChicoBag Original Tote.  Not all giftwarp is recyclable, so save a landfill and reuse the bags later for Lego storage or hair ties.
